Why diet matters for plasma donation
What you eat affects your protein and hematocrit (iron) levels, your plasma color, and how you feel during donation. Centers test both protein and hematocrit before every donation — failing either results in a deferral.
Foods to eat the day before and day of donation
High-protein foods (aim for 50–80g of protein)
- Lean meats: chicken breast, turkey, lean beef
- Fish and seafood
- Eggs and egg whites
- Greek yogurt and cottage cheese
- Legumes: beans, lentils, chickpeas
- Protein shakes (whey or plant-based)
Iron-rich foods (for hematocrit)
- Red meat (especially beef and liver)
- Spinach and dark leafy greens
- Fortified cereals
- Pumpkin seeds and lentils
Hydration
Drink at least 64–80 oz of water the day before and the day of your donation. Being well-hydrated makes your veins easier to access and improves your overall donation experience.
Foods to AVOID before donation
- Fatty foods — High-fat meals can cause lipemia (milky plasma), which makes your plasma unusable and may cause a deferral
- Fried foods — Similarly cause lipemia
- Alcohol — Dehydrating and can affect protein levels; avoid for 24 hours before donation
- Excessive caffeine — Can affect blood pressure; limit before donation
